Teaching short vowels can be fun & engaging using the Vowel Go Fish card game set with Ricardo Reading Mouse®.
Recommended for 4-6 yo but it is also suitable for younger ages who are ready to learn or older ages in need of revising their short vowel sounds. This game uses letter sound–picture association where the short vowel sound matches the beginning sound of the picture.
It encourages visual letter form recognition and verbal letter name identification, of both uppercase or capital letters and lowercase or small letters and matches them to the initial letter sounds using the beginning sound of the pictures on the cards.
Be as creative as you like or ask the children to make up their own games like snap and memory games too.
Great for in class or at home learning: literacy centres, tabletop learning hub, Daily 5, floor time, extension activity or rewards.
Playing games is also excellent for encouraging development of social skills like turn taking, rule following and good sportsmanship.
With adult supervision, as age-appropriate, children can be given opportunity to cut out the cards and game instruction page themselves. This is good for addressing skills like eye-hand co-ordination, fine motor control and bilateral integration (ie. using two hands together).
